Milestone: Future School 2030 the Second Seminar

On January 15, Future School 2030 the Second Seminar continued the discussion of what future school might be and presented 17 cutting-edge studies at Beijing Normal University.

The Future School 2030 Program was launched by AICFE at Beijing Normal University. The purpose of the program was to study the possibilities of future education and to analyze education reform from the perspective of integration of education and technology. Three seminars, respectively in October 2016, January 2017 and May 2017 will be the key milestones of the program, providing face-to-face communication opportunities for all the participants to learn from each other and generate new ideas.

In order to resonate with the technology aspect of education and get all the researchers engaged, an online audience interaction tool (sli.do) was used throughout the seminar to collect questions simultaneously.

So far, we have 17 research teams from 13 different institutions in 6 different countries. They are:

1.      Athabasca University (Canada)
2.      Beijing Normal University (China)
3.      Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (China)
4.      Charles Darwin University (Australia)
5.      EDUCAUSE (USA)
6.      Florida Gulf Coast University (USA)
7.      Institute of Education, University College London (UK)
8.      Open University (UK)
9.      Pecking University (China)
10.  Tampere University of Technology (Finland)
11.  University of British Columbia (Canada)
12.  University of Edinburgh (UK)
13.  University of Helsinki (Finland)

On January 16, a one-day school visiting activity was organized for all the seminar participants to explore local schools in Beijing which adopt advanced methods in school management and teaching. Two schools were selected: No.2 Experimental Primary School of Haidian, and RDFZ Xishan School.

No. 2 Experimental Primary School of Haidian believes in “Practice for truth, verification for understanding”. Therefore, in mathematics class to calculate circumference, students measure and explore the relationship between diameter and circumference by themselves. RDFZ Xishan School is the first one-on-one digital learning public high school and the only public high school that received “Apple Distinguished Program School” in China. The vision of RDFZ Xishan School is “A blissful, different future school” and the goals is that “global citizens with a Chinese heart”. Participants stated that school visiting is a good opportunity to know the development of primary and secondary schools in Beijing, which are very good examples of future schools.

Four months later, the third seminar for Future School 2030 will be held on May 25. At that time, all researchers in the program will gathered together again.
