From March 15th to 16th, 2019, the Knowledge Building Summer Institute 2019 was held at the Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education of Beijing Normal University. The theme was Knowledge Building Practices and Technology for Global Hubs of Innovation. It is organized by Knowledge Building International and Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education of Beijing Normal University. This forum focused on the progress and frontier topics in knowledge building, summarized practices and experience. This meeting strengthened academic exchanges at home and abroad, and provided opportunities for cooperation in research and cooperation. The forum invited more than 60 researchers, teachers and students from all around the world. Professor Shengquan Yu, Executive Director of Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education, and Associate Professor Lu Yu, Director of Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, welcomed visitors. The Project Director Jiachen Song, presided over the meeting.
The meeting started at 9:00 am. Prof. Yu first addressed the visitors and wished the success of the forum.

Then Carl Bereiter, a professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and a co-founder, with Marlene Scardamalia, of the Institute for Knowledge Innovation and Technology at the University of Toronto and visiting professor of Hiroshima University gave a speech entitled Beyond 21st Century Skills. He pointed out that the “21st Century Skills” movement and its offshoots continue to occupy the high ground in educational innovation. Education for the 21st century ought to be framing its objectives within a view of young people as beginners in knowledge creation, moving toward expertise in some of the many ways that people can contribute to progress in a knowledge-creating culture.

Then Developing New Literacies and Competencies through Knowledge Building and Knowledge Building Design, Implementation & Evaluation are held in the third meeting room and Designs and Models for Collective Responsibility, Knowledge Building as a Way of Life: Engaging Schools and Families are held in the first meeting room. Chew Lee Teo from National Institute of Education, Singapore and Shaoming Chai, an associate professor at South China Normal University shared their thoughts too.

On the afternoon of the 15th, Prof. Yu delivered a keynote speech on Study on the Organization of Learning Resources in the Ubiquitous Learning Environment. Then, Concepts, Designs, and Tools for Sustained Work with Ideas and Pervasive Knowledge Building: Seamless Integration of F2F and Online Discourse are held respectively in the first and third meeting rooms. Mei-Hwa Chen, an associate professor at the State University of New York at Albany, Xiaojuan Qi, an associate professor at Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Yusuke Hayashi, an associate professor at Hiroshima University in Japan, gave keynote speeches later.

On the morning of the 16th, Marlene Scardamalia, a professor at the University of Toronto and a co-founder of the Institute for Knowledge Innovation and Technology at the University of Toronto and visiting professor of the Hiroshima University, talked about Globally Networked Knowledge Building Hubs of Innovation. She pointed out that the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has started referring contemporary societies as “innovation-driven”. Knowledge building represents an attempt to refashion education in a fundamental way, so that it becomes a coherent effort to initiate students into a knowledge creating culture.

Then, in the first and third meeting rooms, researchers gave presentations focusing on Teacher Professional Development and Lifelong Innovation and Spreading Knowledge Building through School-University Partnerships. Professor Yibing Zhang of Nanjing Normal University generously delivered speeches and discusses broadly with fellows.

The KBSI 2019 Beijing officially closed at 13 o'clock on the 16th, 2019. It was successfully concluded because experts and scholars not only talked about hot topics in knowledge building, but also deepened the mutual understanding among experts in the same field. The opportunity of close cooperation has emerged thanks to sincere discussion and sharing. Professor Marlene Scardamalia expressed her willingness to cooperate with AICFE in platforms, tools, and practices.
