Prof. Daniel Burgos Delivered a Lecture on MOOCs


Prof. Daniel Burgos gave a lecture with the theme “The Fall and Rise of MOOCs? Creating Purposeful OER for Sustainable Futures” at Room 208, Yanbo Building 9am May 13th, 2016.

Prof. Dr. Daniel Burgos works as Vice-chancellor for Research & Technology at Universidad Internacional de La Rioja (UNIR Research, 
http://research.unir.net), an online university with over 26.000 students with locations in Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina (UNIR, http://www.unir.net). Dr. Burgos holds the UNESCO Chair on eLearning, and the ICDE Chair in Open Educational Resources.

Prof. Burgos’s interests are mainly focused on adaptive, personalized and informal e-learning, learning analytics, social networks, and gamification. He has published over 100 scientific papers and 15 books and has been a researcher or advisor in numerous projects across Europe as well as founder and board member of multiple European associations that advance e-learning and open education in the region.

Recently, he has been appointed as special assistant to the Director General of UNESCO, Ms. Irina Bokova, in the role of deputy chair of the international jury for the UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education. He holds degrees in Communication (PhD), Computer Science (Dr. Ing), Education (PhD), Anthropology (PhD) and Business Administration (BA).

Prof. Daniel firstly explained the meaning of MOOCs and differentiate it with traditional teaching modes. He also analyzed the problems facing MOOCs and OER, such as a lack of a standardized quality, methodology, service provision or any other measure to guarantee an excellent learning process and high user performance. The most important part of his lecture is that he pointed out the challenges for effective adoption of MOOCs, including a competence-based approach, course accreditation, credit recognition, certified educational quality (e.g. Educational methodology), monetization, technology access, proper licensing and OUF (Open, Universal and Free) coding system for educational system. Finally, Prof. Daniel had a fierce discussion with attendees on how to improve the situation of MOOCs in China.
