The 3rd Chinese-American-Finnish Workshop: Using 21st Century Intelligent Technology Tools in Education
Recently, artificial intelligence has become a new focus and a hot spot in the field of science and technology. With significant improvement of computer hardware performance, machine learning algorithms, especially deep learning, have made breakthroughs in image recognition and natural language processing.
Therefore, in March 2018, University of Helsinki, Stanford University and Beijing Normal University took the lead in cross-border cooperation, give full play to their advantages and use technology to improve the quality of education and teaching.
From 27th to 28th May, the 3rd Chinese-American-Finnish Workshop was held at Beijing Normal University. Representatives from various countries present the event. The seminar was held by Faculty of Psychology at Beijing Normal University, Sino-Finnish Joint Learning Innovation Institute (JoLii) at Beijing Normal University and Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education at Beijing Normal University. It is also co-organized by Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of Beijing Normal University and YuanFuDao. The National Centre for Schooling Development Programme, Ministry of Education supported this activity.
On May 27th, the guests gathered at the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of Beijing Normal University which includes Feng CHEN, Director of the National Centre for Schooling Development Programme, Ministry of Education, Mari-Anna Suurmunne, Counsellor for Education and Science at the Finnish Embassy in Beijing, and Zuoyu ZHOU, Vice President of Beijing Normal University, Professor Hannele Niemi, Director of JoLii (Finnish Side), Prof. Jia LIU from Beijing Normal University, Professor Kieith Devlin from Stanford University, and Elizabeth Birr, Dean of the School of Education, University of Michigan.
The guest speakers described their outlook on the application of artificial intelligence to education and looked forward to the cooperation between the parties based on understanding and mutual trust. Subsequently, National Center for Schooling Development of Program, Ministry of Education signed a cooperation memorandum with JoLii and Faculty of Psychology to launch the Future School Project. Then Professor Eric Hamilton from Pepperdine University reported on the AI and Solutions to the Global Learning Crisis. Professor Jia LIU talked about Big Data and AI in Psychometric Assessment. Professor Hannele Niemi reported on the theme of Using Artificial Intelligence to Improve Learning Quality and Student Health. Professor Shengquan YU shared his thought about An AI Empowered Online One-on-one Tutoring System to Educate Students in Rural Areas in China. Professor Heli Ruokamo from University of Lapland focused on the topic of Designing a Pedagogical Model for Digital Game-based Learning in Mathematics.
Dr. Yu LU introduces AICFE to the Audience
On 28th, ten participants visited the Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education (AICFE). Associate Professor Yu LU, director of the AI Lab, introduced research and international cooperation, and have Jiachen SONG and Xuan GU demonstrated the Smart Learning Partner and the Online and Offline Teaching Services. The Senior Research Fellow for the IBE, Professor Eric Hamilton from Pepperdine University and representative from National Centre for Schooling Development Programme were deeply impressed by the online and offline teaching services and AI-driven educational robots and believed that they have broad application prospects.

Through three workshops, the Chinese, American and Finnish parties have identified and worked out a clear cooperation path. In the future they will exchange more, make out clear responsibilities and bring out more research results.
