The 27th Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education and the 2nd APSCE International Conference on Future Language Learning were held in Beijing


The 27th Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCCCE2023) and the 2nd APSCE International Conference on Future Language Learning (ICFULL2023) were held at the Beijing Normal University (Changping Campus) from May 27th to 31st.

GCCCE2023 and ICFULL2023 were respectively organized by the Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCSCE) and the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE), with Beijing Normal University as the host. The conference themes were Bridging Human and Machine: Future Education with Intelligence and Innovation in Language Learning through Navigating the Theory-Practice Nexus.

During the GCCCE2023 and ICFULL2023, a special event was held to commemorate Prof. Kekang He. The event was organized by the Faculty of Education at Beijing Normal University, in collaboration with the School of Educational Technology, Faculty of Education, Beijing Normal University and the Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education (GCSCE). It focused on Prof. He's educational stories and academic ideas.

There is a deep connection between the GCCCE and Prof. Kekang He. Prof. He was one of the founders of GCCCE and served as the Chair of the first GCCCE Academic Committee. He was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Global Chinese Conference on Computers in Education. During the GCCCE, this event paid special tribute to Prof. Hes academic, scientific, and pioneering spirit, aiming to inspire scholars in the field of educational technology in the global Chinese community to explore innovation and contribute to the development of the discipline.

During the conference, there were a total of 6 keynote speeches, 34 sub-conferences, 10 workshops, 6 forums for primary and secondary school teachers, 4 sessions dedicated to English, 1 poster exhibition, 1 seminar, and 1 doctoral student forum. The number of conference submissions and the academic quality of the papers reached a record high. The conference attracted over 500 participants both online and offline. The opening ceremony was live-streamed on various platforms such as Beijing Normal University's official Weibo and Douyin accounts, accumulating a total of 51,000 views. Representatives from numerous domestic and international academic journals and publishers attended the conference.

Professor Zuoyu Zhou, Vice President of Beijing Normal University, delivered a speech, extending a warm welcome to scholars in the field of educational technology from around the world on behalf of Beijing Normal University. He emphasized that this conference explores the future of intelligent education through human-computer interaction and the integration of theory and practice in innovative language learning, focusing on cutting-edge research and fostering innovative ideas. Beijing Normal University is committed to providing a broad platform to promote high-level international exchange and cooperation.

Professor Tak-Wai Chan from Central University, Taoyuan, delivered a speech as the ICFULL Steering Committee Chair. He introduced the goals and principles of APSCE (Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education) and the various international conferences that APSCE will be organizing in 2023.

Professor Bo Jiang, Associate Professor from East China Normal University, delivered a speech as the International Program Coordination Chair of GCCCE. He provided an overview of the organizational work conducted by the Academic Committee, the submission and acceptance status, as well as the overall schedule for the five-day conference. GCCCE spanned five days and comprised 10 themed sub-conferences and three forums. Thirteen sub-committees were formed, consisting of outstanding young and mid-career Chinese scholars in the field of educational technology. A total of 374 submissions were received from 675 authors representing eight countries and regions, including China, Japan, Singapore, and the United States. Ultimately, 278 papers were accepted for presentation.

Associate Professor Yu Lu from Beijing Normal University delivered a speech as the as the Local Organizing Committee Chair of the GCCCE/ICFULL, representing the host, including the Advanced Innovation Center for Future Education at Beijing Normal University. He expressed gratitude for the trust and support from all parties involved and introduced the cultural heritage and developmental history of Beijing Normal Universitys Changping Campus and Shahe Higher Education Park.

Ting-Wen Chang, Assistant to the Dean of the Smart Learning Institute, Beijing Normal University introduced the official journal of the society, Journal of Computers in Education. The journal has published nearly 300 outstanding research papers from over 60 countries and regions. The anticipation is to continue publishing more excellent research findings in the future.

Keynote Speeches

During the conference, Professor Fei Wu from Zhejiang University, Professor Yueguo Gu from Beijing Foreign Studies University, Professor Curtis Bonk from Indiana University, Professor Ju-Ling Shih from Central University, Professor Mirjam Hauck from The Open University in the United Kingdom, and Professor Maggie Minhong Wang from The University of Hong Kong delivered six keynote speeches.

In Professor Fei Wu’s presentation, reviewed the history of artificial intelligence and provided insights into its development trends. He emphasized the 101 Plan and how to leverage "AI+X" to empower talent cultivation in higher education.

Professor Yueguo Gu highlighted in his presentation the innovative applications supported by two artificial intelligence technologies developed by his team: (1) Multimodal Journal, viz. smart phone-based app (xiaolao jinglao yingxiang riji孝老敬老影像日记); and (2) Life-course metaverse reconstruction (rensheng licheng chonggou 人生历程重构)

In the presentation of Professor Curtis Bonk, he emphasized that intelligent learning technologies and innovative learning approaches are constantly evolving and need to address real-world problems. Learners should also take control of their own dreams and make intelligent learning a reality.

Professor Ju-Ling Shih, in her presentation, delved into her in-depth research on the interdisciplinary and dynamic nature of blended learning games, exploring dimensions such as personality, behavior, and strategies. She specifically highlighted game design and multimodal analysis in her discussion.

In Professor Mirjam Hauck’s presentation, focused on digital citizenship education through virtual exchange. She introduced the concept of virtual exchange projects and presented typical case studies.

In Professor Maggie Minhong Wang’s presentation, discussed the potential application of artificial intelligence technologies, such as ChatGPT, in education. She specifically focused on the integration of human knowledge and machine intelligence in shaping the future of education.

Parallel Session Presentations

During the conference, a total of nearly 70 parallel session presentations were conducted both online and offline, including sub-conferences and forums. The offline sessions were held in Buildings 1 and 2 at Beijing Normal University (Changping Campus), while the online sessions utilized the ZOOM platform, facilitating interactive academic exchanges between participants in both online and offline settings.

Closing Ceremony

During the closing ceremony, Dr. Daner Sun from the Education University of Hong Kong announced the recipients of the Best Chinese Paper Award, Best English Paper Award, Best Technical Design Paper Award, Best Student Paper Award, Best Poster Award, and Best Teacher Forum Paper Award. Professor Ju-Ling Shih presented the awards to the winning scholars in person.

Professor Ju-Ling Shih delivered a speech and made a statement as she stepped down as the Chair of GCSCE. She reminisced about her work during her tenure as the chair and expressed her hopes for the society to continue fostering a strong academic community, providing opportunities for young scholars, and promoting the recognition of outstanding research by Chinese scholars in the international academic community.

Subsequently, Professor Siu Cheung Kong, the Chair-elect of GCSCE, and professor at the Education University of Hong Kong delivered a speech online, providing insights into the future development of the society. He also presented an overview of the formal publication and indexing progress of the conference proceedings in both English and Chinese.

Following that, Professor Geping Liu from Southwest University, the representative of the host for GCCCE 2024, introduced the basic information about Southwest University and extended a warm welcome to experts and scholars for the gathering in Chongqing next year.

Subsequently, Professor Chunping Zheng introduced that the 3rd ICFULL will be held at Ateneo de Manila University in Manila, Philippines in 2024.

Finally, Professor Yu Lu, the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, expressed gratitude to all the supporters and highlighted that with the rapid evolution of technologies like generative artificial intelligence, the field of educational technology is currently undergoing a crucial period of transformation and innovation. It requires in-depth thinking and extensive exchanges in the academic community. Looking forward to next years conference, where the latest research achievements and advancements in this field by the global Chinese community can be showcased.
